Lupita Nyong’o Joins Lawmakers on Capitol Hill to Raise Awareness for Uterine Fibroids

August 06,2025

At a powerful event on Capitol Hill, actress and Academy Award-winner Lupita Nyong’o stood alongside lawmakers and health advocates to shine a national spotlight on the ongoing crisis of uterine fibroids—a condition that impacts up to 80% of women by age 50, with Black women facing the highest burden.

Speaking candidly about her own experience—including multiple surgeries to remove over 30 fibroids—Lupita called for an end to the silence surrounding fibroids and emphasized the urgent need for systemic change.

“We must reject the normalization of female pain,” she said, powerfully capturing what so many women endure in isolation.

Lawmakers Take Action: The Uterine Health Legislative Package

Lupita was joined by six Black women legislators who introduced a Uterine Health Legislative Package—a set of bills designed to elevate awareness and improve outcomes for women suffering from fibroids and related conditions:

  • Uterine Fibroid Research and Education Act – Calls for increased funding and education initiatives.
  • U-FIGHT Act – Aims to improve early detection and screening.
  • Stephanie Tubbs Jones Uterine Cancer Research and Education Act – Investigates environmental links to uterine cancer.
  • A Resolution to Declare July as Uterine Fibroids Awareness Month – Encourages nationwide recognition and advocacy.

These proposed policies represent a historic step forward, addressing longstanding gaps in research, access to care, and public health education—especially for Black women, who often face delayed diagnoses, fewer options, and invasive surgeries as first-line treatments.

The Bigger Picture: Moving From Awareness to Action

Lupita’s courage, combined with legislative action and community advocacy, marks a shift in how we talk about and treat fibroids. No one should have to suffer in silence, navigate confusing medical choices alone, or feel dismissed when advocating for their own health.

At Fibroid Fighters, we believe that real change means empowering women with options—from lifestyle changes and monitoring to options for treatment. Every woman’s journey is unique, and every woman deserves access to information, compassionate care, and the freedom to choose the path that’s right for her.

As we continue to raise awareness and push for equity in women’s health, events like this one on Capitol Hill remind us that our voices matter—and our stories can drive change.
