Research Shows Exercise Improves Mental Well-Being for Women with Fibroids

March 06,2025

A new study from Mount Sinai provides evidence that physical activity can significantly improve mental well-being for women living with chronic pelvic pain disorders (CPPDs), including those with uterine fibroids. The research found that participating in moderate-to-vigorous intensity exercise, such as brisk walking or aerobic workouts, was linked to better mental health and overall physical function.

CPPDs, which include conditions like endometriosis and fibroids, impact millions of women worldwide, often leading to anxiety, depression, and decreased quality of life. While treatment options for CPPDs remain limited, the Mount Sinai study emphasizes that regular physical activity can play a significant role in improving mental health for those affected.

The study followed 76 women with CPPDs over 14 weeks using mobile health technology, collecting date through a mobile app and Fitbit devices to track physical activity levels. One of the key findings was that the mental health benefits of exercise appeared to accumulate over time, emphasizing the importance of consistency in physical activity.

However, while staying active may help women with fibroids feel mentally stronger, it does not shrink fibroids or eliminate their symptoms. The most effective way to address fibroids is targeted treatment, such as uterine fibroid embolization (UFE). Without proper treatment, symptoms can persist or worsen, affecting daily life and overall well-being.

This study highlights the growing role of artificial intelligence and wearable technology in chronic disease management, paving the way for more personalized health strategies. Future research will continue to explore how different types and intensities of exercise impact mental health, pain, and fatigue, with the goal of developing tailored activity plans for women with fibroids and other CPPDs.

For women experiencing fibroid-related pain and discomfort, incorporating exercise into a daily routine may support mental health. However, to fully regain physical health and quality of life, seeking appropriate medical care remains important.
