Uterine Fibroid Embolization (UFE): The Least Talked About The Fibroid Treatment

July 03,2025

A recent article from Black Health Matters highlights Uterine Fibroid Embolization (UFE), a minimally invasive and highly effective alternative to traditional surgical treatments for fibroids that often goes unmentioned.

According to research gathered by the Fibroid Fighters Foundation, over 85 percent of patients who undergo UFE report an improved quality of life after the procedure. This outpatient treatment works by cutting off the blood supply to fibroids, causing them to shrink and disappear. Patients typically experience a fast recovery and can often return home the same day without stitches.

Despite its proven effectiveness and patient benefits, UFE remains significantly underutilized. A 2024 survey by the Society of Interventional Radiology revealed that a mere 17 percent of women diagnosed with fibroids were offered UFE as a treatment option, with hysterectomy remaining the primary recommendation. This highlights a critical gap in patient education and referral practices within the medical community.

The article emphasizes the importance of understanding all available options for fibroid treatment, urging patients to inquire about UFE as a viable and less invasive alternative.
